Photoshop fun...

A few weeks ago we learned how to keep one element in a picture, like a red rose or a green bottle, its original color while the rest of the picture is black and white. Like in the picture below the flowers center is still in color while the rest of the picture is in gray.

As you can see this is a pretty cool, useful and simple way to make pictures stand out and it can make dull pictures, like this one, suddenly become interesting and a real attention catcher.  Although there probably is a lot of different ways to do it, this technique is easy and  fast and if you have a simple editing program you could probably make it work. Ill show you how in a few simple steps. (Im using Adobe Photoshop CS2)

1: You choose the picture you want to edit. Its easier if the color is separated and not floating into each other. After this, you duplicate the background.

2:Then you go up to image - adjustments and then gradient map. Select the black to white square.

3: The background copy will now turn black and white. If you want to adjust the shadows, go to Image - adjustments and then Curves. After this you grab your eraser tool.

4: Then you start erasing in the areas you want color to show like this: (this is easier if you zoom in and vary the diameter and hardness of the eraser tool)

Then, you just keep going in all the areas you want color and VoilĂ ! Its an ordinary picture made cool!

Hope you found this useful, if not you can find some video tutorials in photoshop on the links above.
